International Gravel Race makes its debut at Lake Wörthersee
On April 7, 2024, Velden am Wörthersee will host the first Wörthersee Gravel Race, positioning itself as a groundbreaking event in the emerging gravel bike boom. This UCI Gravel World Series Race, with a course designed by reigning gravel world champion Johnny Hoogerland, offers both experienced cyclists the opportunity to qualify for the Gravel Bike World Championships and amateurs the chance to immerse themselves in the world of gravel biking.
The race, which deliberately takes place in the pre-season, not only promises a thrilling competitive spirit, but will also revitalize the tourist region and extend the season at Lake Wörthersee.
Governor Peter Kaiser emphasizes the importance of this event: “Carinthia’s commitment to top-class events, which are always outstanding, underlines its status as a sporting state. The promotion of both top-class and popular sport by the state of Carinthia reinforces this attractiveness – also in terms of Carinthia’s reputation and importance as a tourist destination. With its international appeal, the “UCI Gravel World Series” also represents a great opportunity for Carinthia to expand its status as a sports destination and sought-after tourist destination. Lake Wörthersee is already a popular “base camp” for passionate cyclists and the venue for major sporting events. Whether extended day tours or short selective routes around Villach or through the Rosental valley – Carinthia presents itself as a real treasure trove for cycling enthusiasts. We are delighted to give cycling a great Carinthian stage with the organization of the “UCI Gravel World Series Race”!”
Sebastian Schuschnig, regional tourism officer, emphasizes the importance of revitalizing the pre-season: “The Wörthersee Gravel Race not only brings sporting challenges, but also a welcome boost to the pre-season. The combination of cycling and the beauty of our region will certainly attract new visitors and strengthen our tourism in the long term.”
“Gravel biking has become an important trend, and the Wörthersee Gravel Race positions Carinthia as an attractive destination for cycling enthusiasts. Carinthia was and is a pioneer in gravel biking and is hosting the first UCI World Gravel Series race in Austria,” says Klaus Ehrenbrandtner, Managing Director of Kärnten Werbung, emphasizing the positive impact on the tourism market.
“The gravel bike race not only brings sporting challenges, but also a special atmosphere to Lake Wörthersee. The cooperation with international cyclists promotes cultural exchange and helps to present the beauty of our region to a wide audience,” adds Roland Sint, Managing Director of the Wörthersee-Rosental region.
The Wörthersee Gravel Race promises to be an exciting event and sets a new impulse for the sport of gravel biking in Austria.
